Sports Guy

I swear to God, all that is holy, my mothers grave, what have you. I did not, I repeat did not read Bill Simmons column before I posted. I just know how he thinks, and i will not shoot myself. I like how he says every gambler will do the tease, but he really means himself and Stoner.

"And if that's not enough, everyone and their degenerate brother will be throwing the Chargers, Cowboys and Colts into a three-team teaser on Sunday. That's never good. Out of those three, the Colts seem like the shakiest link, don't they?"

NFL Picks of the Week

Wow did it get cold in here or is it just me, 0-fer yesterday, you would now be up only 80 schrute bucks.

1. Cleveland ML Baltimore
2. Houston -3, Under 39.5
3. Dallas -6, Indy -4, SD -5. The Bill Simmons special. The SG loves the big favorite teased, so lets just do them all at once in a 3teamer.

No cheerleader if I go O-fer the picks before.

NCAA Picks of the Week

Wow, a horrible Sunday going 0-3 and picks and the Bears getting embarrassed on SNF (that just doesnt look right to me). Was up 680 Schrute Bucks, and an 0fer puts us at +380. Onto the picks of the week.

1. Bama +110 FSU
2. Ore -6 Cal and over 73
3. Lets go with a 4 team teaser, since I can not seem to eliminate one of these, all of which are big numbers. UCF -27.5 ULL, Duke +30 Mia, Rut -12.5 Md, UF -12 Aub

Good luck this week and remember this is for fun only. Gambling is illegal and bad.

NFL Picks of the Week

Not a bad saturday, hit the Kentucky Moneyline for +240 (+240), the teaser lost (-100), and the parlay had a winner and a tie so the parlay is not a winner, but you would have gotten paid on the Cinci line (+90). All that equals a plus 230 for the week in Schrute bucks bringing your total to 680 schrute bucks. Now onto todays NFL games.

1. Arizona +280 Baltimore (lots of good moneyline picks)
2. Cleveland +145 over 41 Oakland (like I said)
3. Minnesota +8.5 KC, Detroit +12.5 Eagles, Arizona +14.5 Baltimore (all dogs getting more points)

Enjoy todays action and Go Bears this evening.

Wagering Recap and MNF

Prior to this weekends results, if you "wagered" on my picks, you would have 510 schrute bucks. After this week, with 4 losers and 2 winner (Oregon -16.5 with the over of 63.5 Fresno State, and the 3 team NFL tease) you would still be up 550 schrute bucks (or a nice profit of 40 schrute bucks) which isn't really that bad. As a recap....

1. Minn ML Detroit (LOSER)
2. Houston +6 Under 39 Carolina (LOSER)
3. Dallas +2.5, Seattle +3.5, Pitt -3.5 (WINNER +180)

1. Wash U +165 Ohio St Team that has looked good at home vs a team that has looked bad on the road. (LOSER)
2. Oregon -16.5 Over 63.5 Fresno St (WINNER +260)
3. Syracuse Ill Under 49, ULMonroe +29.5 A&M, Colorado +9.5 FSU (LOSER)

For tonights MNF, lets wager 100 fictional schrute bucks on Philly -1 teased with the under of 44.5. A couple trends for tonights game, Wash is 3-7 last 10 MNF, Under is 5-1-1 in the last 7 meetings, Favorite is 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings, Home team is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings. If I was cocky and riding a little bit better of a streak, I would normally parlay it, I like both lines, but i'll tease it and should be a lock by 3rd Quarter.

NFL Picks of Week 2

This weeks NFL games look good on paper, several good matchups, last week was a great week with the NFL picks, lets see if we can keep the momentum going. Status is up 510 schrute bucks with 300 of those spoken for on the NCAA picks. These picks are for fun only, no actual gambling should occur based on my prognostications. Past results do not guarantee future results.

As a recap every week, I will make 3 picks.

1st pick will be a moneyline wager
2nd pick will be a same game parlay
3rd pick will be the dreaded 3 team teaser.

1. Minn ML Detroit
2. Houston +6 Under 39 Carolina
3. Dallas +2.5, Seattle +3.5, Pitt -3.5

NCAA Picks of the Week

Last week was a great week, if you would have followed my advice, you would be up 510 Schrute Bucks, even with my disastrous moneyline parlay on MNF. It was a shot in the dark for the big bucks, but lets face it, it was really close to paying out.

As a recap every week, I will make 3 picks.

1st pick will be a moneyline wager
2nd pick will be a same game parlay
3rd pick will be the dreaded 3 team teaser.

As always these are for fun and each wager is for 100 schrute bucks.

1. Wash U +165 Ohio St Team that has looked good at home vs a team that has looked bad on the road.
2. Oregon -16.5 Over 63.5 Fresno St
3. Syracuse Ill Under 49, ULMonroe +29.5 A&M, Colorado +9.5 FSU

Picks of the Week

It is almost a cliche to have a blog and do NFL or NCAA picks each week, as I love cliches, this is the first of my weekly picks based blog post. As required by law, these picks are for recreational purposes only, as Judge Smails would say, "Gambling is illegal at Bushwood, and I never slice". To be a little different than the other blogs out there i am doing my picks a little different, I am going have 3 picks a week, but not your standard picks. If you don't know what these bets mean well you would have stopped reading this blog after the first sentence, so I won't insult either of you readers as to what the bets mean. These bets may or may not have reasons/stats to back them up. They may be college, pro, both or a combination thereof.

1st pick will be a moneyline wager
2nd pick will be a same game parlay
3rd pick will be the dreaded 3 team teaser.

Well, onto this weeks picks
1. Tulane +190 Mississippi St
2. Oklahoma -10.5 Miami Under 43
3. UAB +41.5 FSU, LSU -5 VTech, LSU VTech over 32

Top 10 reasons to watch Warriors-Mavs tonight

I will freely admit, as I have done in the past, that I normally need motivation to watch sports on TV when teams that I am a fan of are not playing. Notable exceptions would be football (I'll watch any game anytime), March Madness, and games I have money riding on. I guess I also will watch championship series as well (World Series, NBA finals, etc.)

I will say that NBA Western Conference playoffs normally would not interest me and I would probably only watch if I happened to flip to the channel or I was in a sports bar, etc. But I have been watching this Mavs-Warriors series, staying up to the wee hours here on the East Coast, and it has been well worth it.

Yes I'm cheering for the Warriors b/c they're the underdog but, honestly, this series has been so good that I don't really care who wins so much as that the games are fun to watch. Still not convinced it would be worth your time? I submit to you my top 10 reasons to watch tonight:

10. No #8 seed has ever beaten a #1 seed in a best-of-seven series.

9. Unlike Eastern conference you get high scoring (if you like that sort of thing).

8. Likely Jessica Alba sighting. Unfortunately Cash Warren is part of the package.

7. Will Dirk demonstrate why he deserves MVP consideration or totally self-destruct?

6. You get to watch Andris Biedrins shoot free throws, or at least try to.

5. Watch Stephen Jackson get ejected.

4. Watch Mark Cuban weep like a little bitch.

3. Don Nelson vs. Avery Johnson

2. Baron Davis. Unless you are a Mavs fan how can you not love this guy?

Tape Delayed Live Sports

Over the weekend, I was watching two different sporting events that I originally thought were supposed to be live and were advertised as such, but were actually "taped live". The two events were UFC 70 on SpikeTV on Saturday evening and the Lexington Stakes on the WWL on Saturday afternoon.
My first disappointment was on Saturday afternoon, espn's coverage of the Lexington Stakes. Every year in anticipation for the Triple Crown, I watch all of the ESPN coverage of the warmups to the Derby to get up to speed on all of the contenders and know which Pony to put money on during the Kentucky Derby. As everyone will probably agree, putting a wager on a live sporting event, whether in person or watching on TV makes the even that much more enjoyable, so when the pre-race info was about halfway through I logged into my fictional sportsbook website (online gambling is illegal so imagine I did this) and went to the Horses section to place my fun money wager. Well, after looking for about 15 minutes trying to make sure I was at the right race track for the right race, I decided to check results, and what do you know the race had been run already and this was on tape delay. Nowhere on the coverage did espn mention that this wasnt a live event. I don't remember what they were broadcasting when this race actually was run, but when they have ESPN, News, The Deuce, Classic, ESPNU and other stations, they couldnt have found another channel to broadcast this event live?
My second disappointment came on Saturday night with the Free Showing of UFC 70 on SpikeTV. This one was a little bit easier to figure out, as it didnt end until midnight and the event was in England. Anyone with any brains realizes that this would mean the event took place at 4am in England, so it was obviously tape delayed.
Do both of these networks really think that in the world we live in today where news is avaiable in realtime on countless places on the web that people would be fooled into thinking something was live. Or more importantly do these networks care so little about their core audience that they can show an event tape delayed and say its live? I went on Wikipedia before the UFC event and saw the results online and was able to parlay this knowledge into a couple of friendly wagers with some friends at the bar over a couple drinks, as Thomas Tusser said, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

Gambling

I don't want this to turn into a gambling blog, or more importantly a blog in which I brag about my ineptitude with gambling, but lets face it, as a 30 something white male in a relationship, there are few things of interest that other like minded individuals would want to read about (Music, movies, alcohol and book reviews are others).

All of these picks are for recreational purposes only because gambling is illegal (even though you can get sportslines in every major newspaper) and Hammering Hank and the guy who leather was with regularly make picks based on the lines. Some picks will have analysis, some won't, some will make sense, others won't.

Lakers +9 Phoenix and here are 4 reasons.
  • Lakers are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
  • Lakers are 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Phoenix.
  • Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
  • Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
Brewers +146 ML Cubs
  • Milwaukee 12-7 ML this season (league best)
  • Cubs 7-12 ML this season (league worst)
Chelsea even Liverpool
  • Hometeam is 3-0-1 in last 4
  • Chelsea is playing without Ballack and Essien but are playing well with the Cole brothers.

April 24th now waiting for May 12th

Espn.com is reporting that Mark Prior will go in for "exploratory surgery" on Tuesday April 24th. Hoping to find what might be wrong, it is unknown if they will just lay him on the operating table and then open him up like the game Operation, until they find something that could be wrong with him. I could run down all of Pryors injuries and problems that he has had over the last couple years, but it can all be summed up in this statistic, since 2004 he has been on the disabled list 8 times, which is well alot, Ken Griffey, Jr hasnt even been on the disabled list that many times and Fred Taylor is impressed.
Based on this info on Mark Pryor, the revised Over/Under on Kerry Woods surgery has been moved up one week until May 12th. Heavy action has been on the under since the line was set November 7th, and the new date has shifted based on this action and the fact that it seems like both of these guys have surgery with 3-4 wks of each other (not actual fact, just seems like it).
I think it is about time the Cubs cut their losses and try to get pennies on the dollar for these two has beens, oh wait excuse me, Flash in the Pans. Maybe the new ownership of the Cubs will make this a priority, or maybe in the sales contract, the Tribune Company will have a lifetime contract on both of them included in the sale.

Deadspin Disrespects Bulls

One of my favorite sites, Deadspin disrespected the Bulls today in their daily NBA Roundup. To quote Deadspin, "Jay-Z And The No. 2 Seed. Larry Hughes scored 22 points and LeBron James had 18 points to lead Cleveland to a 98-92 win over Philadelphia 76ers. The Cavaliers can claim the No. 2 seed in the East tonight if they beat Milwaukee and New Jersey beats Chicago (also tonight). Will Nets part-owner Jay-Z give a more stirring pre-game speech than his pal LeBron tonight? We'll see."

As the Bulls hold the tiebreaker over the Cavaliers for the Second Seed in the East it is theres to lose, not the Cavaliers to win. The LeBrons could win 1,231 to 9 and as long as the Bulls win the Bulls are the 2 seed in the East. I can understand that Jay Z vs LeBron is a better headline, but well I can't think of a better headline. At least Will could have used this gay photo.

For you gamblers out there, Covers.com has the Bulls a 4.5 point favorite and the LeBrons are a 14.5 point favorite. I like both teams to cover. This also will start the trend of picks of the week, day, etc. in all sports, including my big Kentucky Derby preview coming up shortly before the Run for the Roses.
